Kang Yung Study Hall
Sha Tau Kok was once prosperous with beautiful houses. Kang Yung Study Hall is situated in Wo Hang Village in Sha Tau Kok and built by the Li clan in early Qing dynasty. It began as a simple school for 5 to 10 pupils, and extended into a 2-storey building during Qianlong’s reign. It is one of the few examples of study hall built purely for teaching purposes. Rectangular in shape and built with green brick walls, this study hall has a simple layout of 2 halls and an attic to be used as classroom and living quarters respectively. The different rooms are divided by unfired mud-brick, and the 2 halls are divided by a courtyard. The statue of Confucius and a plague meaning “master of teachers” can be found in the main hall.
The name “Kang Yung” is said to have come from Miscellaneous Morsels of Youyang, a prose-styled novel from Tang Dynasty. The story was about a scholar, Li, meeting a fortune teller after he failed the national exam. The fortune teller prophesied that Li will pass the exam the coming year and made prime minister in 20 years. The prophecy came true, and “Kang Yung” was related to the exam question. The owner of the Study Hall might name the building to encourage students, and the school did produce many scholars. In the 20th century, it became a village primary school until its last school year ended in 1986 when it was official closed down.
