Employers of participants of the REA Scheme can at the same time enrol in the
Employment Programme for the Elderly and Middle-aged (EPEM). Job seekers aged 40 or above and have an unemployment period of not less than 1 month within 1 year prior to the commencement date of employment are eligible for this programme. Eligible job seekers will be engaged in full-time or part-time (i.e. working 18 hours to less than 30 hours per week) permanent jobs. They will be provided with on-the-job training recognised by the Labour Department. Job seekers will not only secure stable employment, but also acquire essential job-specific skills. No prior registration under EPEM is required. Relevant registration can be made when job seekers have secured full-time or part-time permanent employment from vacancies registered at the Labour Department.
The government has launched different schemes and programmes to encourage the elderly and middle-aged to join the labour force. The latest scheme ‘
Re-employment Allowance Pilot Scheme (REA Scheme)’ targets at Hong Kong residents aged 40 or above who are legally employable in Hong Kong and have not been engaged in any paid work in Hong Kong (including employment, self-employment and running a business) for three consecutive months or more. Participants who have worked full-time for six consecutive months will be provided with an allowance of $10,000, while those who have worked full-time for 12 consecutive months will be given an additional allowance of $10,000. The amount of allowance for participants completing part-time employment will be halved.
Employment Program for Elderly aims to provide career counselling and on-the job support for elderly job seekers aged 55 or above. Placement service is provided with part time or full time post. All services are free of charge.
