Green Hub (Old Tai Po Police Station)
Located on a small hill at the end of Wan Tau Kok, Tai Po, the Old Tai Po Police Station was built in 1899. It is the location where ceremony took place marking the takeover of the New Territories. After the Qing Dynasty signed the treaty to extent the British colony in 1898, Tai Po was the administrative center of the New Territories. Sir Henry Blake, Hong Kong Governor then, ordered a police station to be built on the hill. On April 17 1899, the flag-raising ceremony took place here at the first police station in the New Territories, and became the police headquarters. From 1941 to 1987, it had been the home of Regional Crime Prevention Office of the Northern New Territories.
Originally built as 2 one-story buildings, one as the main building and one as staff quarters, and addition canteen block was built in 1930. The main building is of colonial style with a Chinese pyramidal tiled roof. It was categorized as a Grade II historic building in 1988, then a Grade I historic building in 2009. In the middle of the same year, Development Bureau announced Batch II of Revitalizing Historical Building through Partnership Scheme with Old Tai Po Police station back on the list. In 2010, the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden was officially granted the right to revitalize the site into Green Hub, an education center to promote low carbon living. It provides low-carbon living, cooking class, guided tours, short courses, field activities and themed workshops. It was awarded the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation in 2016.
