Old House, Wong Uk Village

It was built during the Reign of Qianlong in Yuen Chau Kok, Shatin. We must talk about the geographical uniqueness of Yuen Chau Kok if we were to understand the historic value of Wong Uk Village. Yuen Chau, originally named Yuen Chau  [TN: meaning round island], was an island in the sea in Shatin. It was the distributing center for merchants and goods between Guangdong and Kowloon. Therefore, Wong Uk Village was the natural gather point for business travellers.

It is believed that the Wong couple, who were from Guangdong, came here to build a village some 200 years ago. They also opened a traveller’s inn next to village houses. However, as logistic network developed in Kowloon and reclamation for development of Shatin New Town, its pivotal location had come to a decline, and old buildings were torn down one by one. The Old House left today was built in 1911 by Wong Tsing Wo, the 19th generation descendent. It is a typical Hakka 2 hall design, with green bricks and granite, with fine mural paintings and traditional decorations inside.
