Tai Po Wun Yiu Kiln site
Tai Po was once the center for porcelain industry in the New Territories. Wun Yiu is the only blue-and-white porcelain kiln site discovered. As early as Ming Dynasty, Man clan and Tse clan operated at the kiln site, manufacturing blue-and-white porcelain here because of the abundant water source and mineral in the soil. The Great Clearance edict at the early Qing Dynasty made villagers abandon the site, but they eventually returned after the edict was relieved. Towards the mid to late Qing Dynasty, the site was a sizable kiln with an annual production of 400,000, selling its products to Jiangmen area. It was know as the “coastal porcelain city.” There is even a Fan Sin Temple erected in the village to worship this patron deity of potters. However, in the beginning of the 20th century, competition from other kiln sites with cheaper prices drove the Wun Yiu Kiln Site to finally stop operation in 1932. With respect to the historic significance of the kiln site, it was declared monument in 1983. An exhibition hall was built in 2010 for public to visit.
