Situated to the east of Wang Chau, Nam Sang Wai is crisscrossed by the Kam Tin River and Shan Pui River. This idyllic area is home to (mostly abandoned) farms, fish ponds, wetlands and a large stretch of grassland, attracting bird-watchers, cyclists and picnickers as well as photographers and even film crews.
Start your exploration of this area on Nam Sang Wai Road, which encircles Nam Sang Wai. Stroll along the bank of the Shan Pui River and enjoy the lush scenery. The sandbar at the intersection of the Kam Tin and Shan Pui rivers is especially good for observing a variety of birds, including migratory birds. Mudskippers and fiddler crabs are also abundant on the wetlands of Nam Sang Wai. Paths lined with tall River Red Gum trees are often featured in films and TV dramas. At last, jump onto a small wooden ferry that carries visitors across Shan Pui River for a fee. This is now the only river-crossing ferry in Hong Kong. The whole trip takes about 3 hours. There might be a few simple eateries along the route inside village houses. However, these do not have regular opening hours. Bring along your own snacks and drinks.
