Let’s talk about what is happening this Fall and what key pieces you should consider adding to your existing wardrobe. Some of the key trends we see are embroidery, brocade, platform with chucky heels, jeweled patches, velvets, wraps, denim, camel-everything and ballet-everything.
Jacket always functions as a canopy or an armour in my eyes. With the Hong Kong weather perpetually sitting above 25 degree Celsius 9 months out of the year, sometimes you would think that a jacket may not be the most valued item in your wardrobe. But a great jacket can transcend an outfit as much as a good hair cut. It can come in the form of a wrap, a shawl, a blanket, a poncho/cape, a cardigan, a shrug, a coat etc. This season, however, let’s put our focus on a denim jacket.
Gone are the structured, heavy denim material known through the early 80s. The current choices are truly endless.
Limit your denim jacket choices within the washes from off-white to French blue; anything darker might not function as well with the second key item I recommend updating. Together with the wrap dress/skirt, they would give you a sophisticated yet casual look for everyday wear. What we want to achieve here is “modern elegance”. Keep the dress/skirt simple and have fun with your denim jacket choices. Wrap dresses sometimes can come across too classic and you might end up riding the fence between “missy/old” and fresh. You want to look modern, fresh and feminine; not missy, old, and God forbid, SENIOR!!! More on how to pick the right fabric and style on wrap dresses at a later time.
Pick your new denim jacket with brocade, jeweled patches, cut-out works, or your favorite blue. Jacket length from under-bust to below hip. Pair that with a jersey wrap dress/skirt and you got yourself a travel-friendly, functional ensemble where you can brave the humid weather, while cozy up in an air-conditioned city. Oh, and don’t forget the right under garment can make or break your outfit, especially when it comes to wrap dresses. Have fun shopping!
